Session 5

Best Practices

There are many ways to integrate technology in an educational setting. The ways to integrate it are almost as diverse as the ways to establish a best practice. Technology is all around us. It takes a technologically literate person to recognize technology not just for what it is, but for the infinite uses it can have when it is coupled with a little creativity and imagination. But for as many diverse practices as there are, I have to say that I like one of the most basic ones. I like power point presentations. It is simple software with great flexibility.

I was introduced to Microsoft Power Point by way of conferences and meetings a few years back. The first uses of power point presentations that I witnessed were simple slides with bullets and paragraphs. When it was my turn to show the logistics for our next operation in the desert, I decided to try to accomplish it with a power point presentation. I borrowed the software and began playing with it. My first presentation was very basic. It took a few more presentations and experimenting with it to get the automation, sound, and animation features to be integrated smoothly into the conferences. I believe power point is one of the most used, even sometimes abused, software programs. It is easy to learn. Still pictures and animation give it a visual attractiveness that can aid in keeping the audience engaged and interested. Some people have not used this program because they have not taken the time to learn it, others feel it is boring. Just like with any other technology, the situation and individual will dictate the best practice to follow.

Rosa,
So have you created a Best Practice for yourself with the use of Power Point? I agree with you that this software is one of the more powerful tools that can be used, while at the same time can be so misused and abused. Seems like a great area to consider best practices for.

Hi Davena

The best practice for me is to use power point software without abusing it. I try to have on the screen key information that I can use as a starting point for the theme. I try to make it eye appealing and hpefully interesting.

I really have not use Power Point that much, but I think it can be a great tool to use in the classroom..for presentations from the teacher and the students.

Hey Rosa,
I agree that Power Point can be an excellent source if used as a Best Practice. I love to use it in my classroom to capture the attention of the intended audience, my students!!

Hello Rosa,

I agree with you, Power Point is a good tool to incorporate in our educational arsenal of technology integration. Power Point can be one more tool at our disposal as a best practice. Needless to say, a tool is only as effective as the individual's ability to use it; this is where the real limitation lies at. Properly used, Power Point is a very powerful tool, that makes for a great best practice.

Hi Rosa,

I also use PowerPoint in my classroom for my lectures and presentations. I agree that it is a simple software with great flexibility. I usually just create slides with definitions, theorems or proofs on them. In other words, I only create slides with the information that the students could find in their textbook. Then I can work problems and solutions on the board. This allows me the freedom of referring back to definitions from the book without having to write up the definitions on the board.

I love Power Point as well, and began as you did. I think that its simplicity is what fools everyone, they don't believe it can be that powerful and easy.

I admit, I use Powerpoint too. For me it is a way to organize my lecture more than a way to present information to the audience.
